Buke of the Howlat - Circa 1508
This small fragment of print has an importance out of all proportion to its size. Used as scrap in the binding of a lawyer's note book of the 1530s, eagle-eyed experts have spotted that the type was that used by the early Scottish printers Chepman and Myllar. It contains lines from one of the few surviving pages of "Buke of the Howlat" (The Owl's Book), a satire in Scots printed by Scots about Scottish political life.
