Liber Studiorum - 1807
Prompted by the rivalry between Claude and Turner, the first of this series of sketches was produced in 1807. They comprise "very careful elaborations of light and shade effects, executed in mezzotints on copper and printed with brown ink".
"Several of the plates were etched, and some were even engraved by Turner himself; but they were chiefly executed by Charles Turner, A.R.A., at seven guineas a plate. No proof set of the plates was ever issued, but at the completion of the series Turner arranged them in sets and sold them [in] 1820 for fourteen guineas".
This set was the property of the Earl of Camperdown, descendant of Admiral Duncan, victor of the Battle of Camperdown, whose seat lay at the north west boundary of Dundee. Camperdown House is now in the ownership of Dundee City Council.
