Ports d'Aberdeen, Montross, Dundee, Rivere de Tay et Baye de St. Andrews - Circa 1700

A hand tinted navigational chart extending from Montrose in the north to the Isle of May in the south, and Dundee in the west to the Bell Rock in the east. Complete with soundings, hazards, transits, leading lights, representations of prominent landmarks, compass rose and decorations.

The dedication reveals that this is an extract of Captain Greenvile Collins's "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot", first published in 1693. The title is proud of the plate mark, and is clearly overprinted for the use of French-speaking seafarers. Surveying for this work was begun in 1681, but the precise date of Marr's survey is uncertain.

John Marr, also spelt Mar, published a textbook entitled "Navigation in Coasting" in 1693. This comprises sections on navigational techniques and the duties of a seaman. A. H. W. Robinson in "Marine Cartography of Britain" suggests that Marr also provided the land survey for this chart.
