Ane Compendious Buik of Godlie Psalmes - Circa 1567
John, James and Robert Wedderburn of Dundee, were sons of a merchant at West Kirk Style. They were educated at St. Andrews, wrote anti-Romanist ballads and were exiled because of their religious beliefs. John is regarded as the principal author, and it is generally thought that he began compiling the ballads in Wittemberg about 1530.
The sacred parodies on popular ballads were probably first issued as broadsheets. The sacred texts include liturgies which demonstrate, in some respects, a close affinity to Cranmer's prayer book for the Church of England.
This volume is thought to be unique, and possibly the first extant edition of the work. However, the date of publication and publisher is merely inferred from the title page of another work, included within the binding.
