Wood's Town Atlas - 1821
John Wood's Town Atlas, which was published in 1821, was supplemented in 1828 by a Descriptive Account, which devoted 6 pages to the town of Dundee. The royal burgh is described as a large and flourishing seaport, a well built town consisting of four principal streets, diverging from the High Street.
The situation of the town "is most delightful", and various fine buildings are described, including the Town House, the Old Steeple and the Sailors' Hall. 170 vessels totalling 17,000 tons belonged to the port, manned by up to 15,000 seamen.
Industries appear to depend largely on seagoing trade, and include linen manufacture, ship building, sail making, rope making, soap making, sugar baking, tanning and brewing. Dundee was famous for its educational facilities and the town's population in 1821 was 30,575.
